Turning Family Photos Into Wall Art That Shapes Your Space

We think a lot about the images families choose to live with, the ones that quietly shape how a home feels. Creative, energetic, playful, grounded. And when the artwork on your walls comes from your own family photos, that feeling becomes even more personal. The mood of the room is set by the people who fill your life.

That’s why we love helping families turn their images into large acrylic prints (we’re talking in the range of 12×18” to 30×40”). Large prints shift the dynamics from a picture that you look at to a picture that you live with. Acrylic prints keep the photograph front and center: No matting, no thick frame, no distractions. Just the moment itself, living in your home in a clean, modern, generous way.

Large prints pull you in from afar. And well-chosen family photos can fit nicely with other pieces of art, like this acrylic print we have of Mariliana’s grandma wading in the ocean.

How to choose a family photo to print large

Look for images that feel more like a moment than a portrait. Ideally, the image should evoke a feeling and be the type of picture that someone whose family members aren’t in the picture be drawn into.

Here’s a simple way to choose 👇

Pick photos that…

🌿 Feel natural and unposed. Often it’s the in-between moments — absorbed, relaxed, connected — that make the most compelling wall art. Pictures where everybody is looking at the camera can feel imposing over time when they’re printed large.

🌤️ Have room to breathe. It’s often nice to choose a picture where there is space between the subjects, or distance from the camera. Something with scale and where you can breathe.

✨ Carry a clear feeling. You want energy or emotion. You want a picture that evokes something inside of you. Be attuned to how a picture makes you feel when you look at it, and go for those ones that make your heart jump.

How to make acrylic prints with your family photos

1️⃣ Find your spot. Walk through your home and notice where a larger print could live — an entry wall, a hallway, above the couch. Look for spots with good light or places your eye naturally lands.

2️⃣ Pick your size + orientation. Once you’ve chosen the wall, decide what fits: vertical for height, horizontal for wider spaces. Most families love 12×18” to 30×40” — bigger always feels better.

3️⃣ Choose your images. Select 1–3 photos that feel natural, spacious, and full of mood.

SHK clients: You can order acrylic prints directly through your gallery, and we’re more than happy to help you select images or to jump on a video call to look at your space.

A Final Thought

When you choose a photo to live on your wall — and give it space to breathe — it becomes a quiet, everyday reminder of who you’re growing into as a family. The right image doesn’t just decorate a room. It anchors it. And over time, it becomes part of the home you’re building together.
